Henry Chen: Laid off from Meta → signed offer in under 3 months

Henry spent 13 years at Meta before he got laid off this year.

You'd think that kind of tenure makes you bulletproof everywhere.

It almost worked against him.

Most developers in his spot assume the resume speaks for itself, but it doesn't.

He went from laid off to a signed offer in under 3 months.

Here's what actually got him there:

1. The tooling gap

Everything he'd built for over a decade ran on internal, proprietary systems.

Even his version of Terraform was the company's own, not the one the rest of the industry runs on.

Recruiters and interviewers didn't care how deep that expertise went. None of it was visible from the outside.

2. The interview prep

He understood the concepts like monitoring, alerting, scaling, system design.

But his coding felt "hacky" on LeetCode, and he'd never had to defend a system design decision out loud, under pressure, in front of a stranger.

3. The proof

Understanding concepts on paper isn't the same as showing you can ship on the systems companies actually use.

So alongside interview prep, he worked on industry-standard production systems from scratch, the opposite of the closed environment he came from. (this one is still ongoing)

Offer in hand, in under 3 months.

Not the exact role he pictured going in, but one he's genuinely excited about, with comp he's happy with.

If you've spent years inside one company's ecosystem and have no idea how that experience translates anywhere else, this is for you.

“Good news! I just got a job offer yesterday! I'm excited about the things I will be able to work on. I'm also satisfied with the comp it's offering.”
